Joshua Onyeka Osagu

Analytical and Environmental Scientist | Lab and Field Operations

Joshua Onyeka Osagu is a highly skilled research chemist with over 5 years of experience specializing in analytical and environmental chemistry. With a strong background in both field and laboratory operations, Joshua has made significant contributions to chemical research, focusing on the impact of anthropogenic activities on the natural environment. His work includes pioneering initiatives for advanced experimental design and automation, as well as developing integrated methods to detect and monitor chemical pollutants in aquatic ecosystems.

Joshua holds an MSc in Engineering (Applied and Analytical Chemistry) and a second MSc in Analytical and Environmental Chemistry. Over the course of his career, Joshua has collaborated with cross-functional teams to advance the understanding of persistent and toxic organic compounds and their transformation products in aquatic environments. Joshua has extensive expertise in various analytical techniques, having led multiple projects in academia and industry that drive innovation in analytical chemistry for environmental sustainability.

Specializing in developing and optimizing analytical techniques, Joshua is skilled in monitoring and quantifying chemical contaminants, including petroleum hydrocarbons compounds, emerging pollutants, and other chemicals of environmental concern. His expertise includes high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) - triple quadrupole MS, LC-Orbitrap, as well as spectroscopic methods such as AAS, AES, fluorescence, and XRD. Joshua has developed and validated methods based on the Canadian Chemical Management Plan (CMP) and the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI). His research continues to shed light on the presence of emerging contaminants, including phenylenediamines, corrosion inhibitors, and non-exhaust emissions, across various environmental matrices.

Beyond his technical expertise, Joshua has successfully managed research projects from inception to completion, overseeing budgets and procurement of laboratory equipment and materials. He is also a proficient data analyst, leveraging tools like R, Excel, Xcalibur, and Compound Discoverer for mass spectrometry analysis amongst others.

Joshua is immersed in advancing scientific knowledge through mentoring, having trained undergraduate interns and junior colleagues in laboratory techniques and requisite software applications. His dedication to quality control, regulatory compliance, and cutting-edge research has resulted in technical reports, standard operating procedures, hazard analysis documents, and manuscripts for publication, as well as presentations at international symposia.

Committed to scientific innovation and environmental sustainability, Joshua continues to push the boundaries of analytical chemistry and laboratory research to address global challenges in marine conservation and pollutant monitoring.
